Cornerstone has created more than 20 schematic designs for sports facilities (nationally) alone. Principal Mike Baumstark notes, "From each one we learn and carry that experience forward to our next project. We also rely on our own personal experiences and participation in a variety of sports to gain a better understanding of our clients' needs".

One of Cornerstone's recent projects is Attack Athletics located on Chicago's west side. Attack was founded in 1989 by Tim Grover, best known for being Basketball icon Michael Jordan's trainer. When Grover wanted to create a world-class fitness and training facility that would serve professional athletes and also offer a motivation facility where clients could commit to achieving their fitness goals, he called on CenterPoint Properties to help him create a space like no other. CenterPoint in turn engaged Cornerstone to serve as architect on the project.

Fred Reynolds, Sr. VP for Development for CenterPoint Properties, points out that as impressive as the facility is, it's only one of about 30 highly successful projects on which his company has collaborated with Cornerstone. "All the projects have gone well," Fred Reynolds notes.

This year's Cornerstone Chili Cook-Off champion was none other than Bryan Ringham, co-principal of the firm. After fierce competition, Ringham won the coveted Chilistone Award for his Buffalo Chicken Chili. The annual event encourages employees and vendors to compete for the tastiest chili while mingling with sniffling noses. Close contenders included a Meat Lovers' Chili, Spicy Chili, and Thanksgiving Turkey & Pumpkin Chili.

The brick and stone facility will feature expanses of glass windows curving around the exterior, a second floor patio, faux-copper accents, and a 20' high glass lobby entrance. The building is designed to be fully automated and feature a building management system. It is cable ready for plug-n-play applications and has the potential for tenant expense application management system (TEAM), making it "a building with a brain." This building will be LEED certified.

General contractor Morgan / Harbour Construction anticipates groundbreaking in Spring 2008, with completion scheduled for Fall 2008.

The fully air conditioned, precast building features a 40' clear height, 175' by 460' natural turf field, divisible into four smaller fields. Mezzanine, concession stand and vending areas are available for spectators. The design intends to maximize income potential by doubling as a 100,000-square-foot convention center and accommodating additional sports interests with two basketball courts, four volleyball courts, driving range for golf, plus batting cages and pitchers mounds for softball and baseball.

In May 2007, Cornerstone Architects received the Outstanding Business Partnership award from DuPage High School District 108 for their involvement in the student mentoring program. Lake Park High School nominated Cornerstone after only one year of participation in the program.

The mentorship offers students invaluable insight about prospective careers through time spent within the working environment. At Cornerstone, they get a taste of architecture by partaking in all aspects of the field, including design, drafting, site observation, interior design and other pertinent topics. "Everyone in the office gets involved in this," according to Principal Bryan Ringham. "We all find it very rewarding to educate these students and to make them more confident in their career choices."

Cornerstone provides mentoring for students from Lake Park and Fenton High Schools.
